Personal Life

Leonard Belzer was born on May 14th, 1941 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States of America. He was born to Charles Belzer and Frances Belzer, growing up Leonard’s mother was described to be often physically abusive towards Leonard and his brother, Richard Belzer. The brothers used comedy as a means to distract their mother.

Education and Career

Leonard was an alumnus of Columbia University. He was an author and a former radio host for a radio program called ‘The Comedy Hour’. He was also a veteran of the Air Force Intelligence Service. Leonard had also penned a book along with his wife titled ‘Spiritual Places In and Around New York City’.

Leonard was married to a well-known producer and director named Emily Squires. She was best known for her work ‘Sesame Street’ which was a live-action comedy television series for children. She is known for her other works such as Guiding Light, Search for Tomorrow, The Secret Storm and As The World Turns. She is a six-time recipient of the Daytime Emmy Awards for her series ‘Sesame Street’.

Emily, however, sadly passed away on 21st November 2012 at the age of 71. Her death left a huge hole in Leonard’s life.

The grief that accompanied his wife’s death was something that Leonard could not cope with. Two years later, on July 30th 2014, Leonard jumped to death from his luxury apartment building in Manhattan, New York City, United States of America.

Leonard Belzer’s younger sibling is none other than the renowned actor and comedian Richard Belzer. He was born on August 4th 1944 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States of America. Richard experimented with different comedy genres such as political satire, deadpan, and observational comedy. As an actor, he is best known for his role as John Munch on the television series ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ and ‘Law and Order: Special Victims Unit’. His career is not just limited to being an actor and a comedian, it also extends to him being an author, some of his notable works are I Am Not a Cop, I Am Not a Psychic, How to Be a Stand-up Comic and Hit List.

Richard, unfortunately, passed away on 19th February 2023 in France due to complications that arose from a respiratory disease.
